Government Introduces “Visa Brake” on Selected Routes

What has been announced?
The Government has introduced restrictions on selected visa routes for certain nationalities following evidence that a high proportion of individuals entering the UK under these routes have later claimed asylum.
As a result, the following restrictions will apply:
- Study visa applications from nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan will no longer be accepted.
- Work visa applications under the Skilled Worker route will also no longer be accepted from Afghan nationals.
When will the changes take effect?
The new restrictions are expected to come into force on 26 March 2026.

The Home Office has also confirmed via the Sponsor Management System (SMS) message board that Authorising Officers and Key Contacts were contacted on 5 March 2026 with further details regarding the Government’s coordinated action to implement commitments outlined in the Immigration White Paper and the Asylum Policy Statement: Restoring Order and Control.

Practical impact for employers
For most corporate sponsors, the practical impact is expected to be limited.
