A significant development in UK-China travel policy
During UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing in late January 2026, the UK and China reached a new travel arrangement under which Chinese government will allow UK passport holders to enter mainland China without a visa for stays of up to 30 days for the purposes of tourism and short-term business visits.
This change brings UK travellers into alignment with around 50 countries that already benefit from similar short-stay visa-free access to China, including many European and Asia-Pacific states.
Important note: The date of implementation is not yet confirmed, but this is expected soon. Hence, we ask everyone to look out for the confirmed date before making any travel plans without a valid visa
What does this mean for travellers?
- Tourists and business visitors can make short visits of up to 30 days without obtaining a Chinese visa in advance once the policy is formally implemented.
- The visa-free access reduces travel costs, paperwork and processing time, making China a more accessible destination for meetings, trade fairs, networking, and leisure travel.
- This policy is especially welcome for companies with frequent short-term travel needs, since it removes one of the most common administrative hurdles.
Important to note
- The agreement is unilateral by China; the UK still requires visas for Chinese nationals travelling to the UK.
- The exemption only applies to stays under 30 days. Purposes such as longer stays, work activities, long-term business assignments, study, family reunification, or residency still require the appropriate visa.
Broader context
This travel facilitation is part of a broader UK–China cooperation package agreed during the visit, which also includes tariff reductions, cooperation on service-sector access, and joint efforts on people-smuggling challenges.
